severe asthma research themes

The Centre’s Asthma Research is focused on two key themes:

THEME 1: Monitoring the Burden of Severe Asthma in Australia

To better understand the impact of severe asthma our Centre will use disease registers to determine disease prevalence and impact, data linkage analysis to assess patient outcomes and qualitative methods to better understand the experience of patients with severe asthma and improve management approaches.

THEME 2: Initiatives To Aid Management Of Severe Asthma

Severe asthma requires a different management approach to mild or moderate asthma. Phenotyping provides personalised information about disease processes in individual patients and allows for rational treatment approaches using new, targeted therapies. Our Centre will assess the utility of new diagnostic tests and techniques to better inform patient phenotyping and management.

Workforce Training

Research and training will be undertaken at three world-class research centres, each of which has a strong track record in the assessment and management of severe asthma research:

  • Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Newcastle
  • The Woolcock Institute for Medical Research (WIMR), Sydney
  • The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne

Collaboration Building

The development of new patient management strategies and effective implementation requires effective teamwork and collaboration. Our Centre investigators have a long track record of collaborative research, integrating research findings and developing strategies for future research.

Our Centre will also actively facilitate collaboration within Australia and internationally, through a number of programs:

  • This website, and distributed e-newsletters to promote communication
  • Pilot research funding to support asthma research activities
  • Active mentoring between Centre investigators and new trainees
  • Hosting international and national experts
  • Recording webinars on key topics in severe asthma research
  • Hosting research meetings and round table discussions
