April 28, 2016Severe AsthmaNews

We are currently inviting applicants for a PhD project within the Centre of Excellence in Severe Asthma. The student will be supervised by Professor John Upham (Brisbane) and Conjoint Professor Peter Wark (Newcastle), based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane, Australia.

This project will examine anti-viral immune function in people with severe asthma, to identify and understand the mechanisms that make some people unusually vulnerable to virus infections, and understand how this relates to different patterns of airway inflammation. Experiments will examine the molecular pathways leading to dysregulated interferon production, and dendritic cell subset function. Further information can be found here.

Centre of Excellence in Severe Asthma

The NHMRC-funded Centre of Excellence in Severe Asthma (www.severeasthma.org.au) supports training and research translation in severe asthma. The Centre brings together researchers in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, with the aim of achieving integrated, effective and evidence-based care, transforming the approach to severe asthma.

The project will be largely based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane and enrollment through the University of Queensland. Interaction with CRE researchers around Australia will be encouraged. The scholarship will be funded 50:50 between the CRE and University of Queensland. Students who obtain an Australian Postgraduate Award or NHMRC PhD Scholarship will receive a top up scholarship.

Creative, articulate and strongly motivated candidates with an Honour’s or Master’s degree in biomedical science, medicine, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Experience in immunology, cell biology and molecular biology would be an advantage. The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic and inter-professional research group, with an outstanding research track record and exceptional research facilities.
